Audio and Video Playback System

The audio and video playback system at Neuadd Dyfi is based around QLab, running on an Apple Mac mini (M2).
This setup is used for sound effects, music playback, and projection/video cues during shows.


💻 Core Playback Device

Device Location Description
Apple Mac mini (M2) Pigeon Loft Main playback computer for audio and video cues.
  • The Mac mini connects to the QU-32 for audio output and can be connected to the a projector for visuals.
  • QLab show files are stored locally, with backups on Google Drive/github.

🎭 QLab Software

  • Free version covers basic stereo playback and simple cues. Temporary paid licenses are purchased for productions needing extra features (e.g. multiple audio outputs, video, or MIDI control).
  • Daily or weekly rentals can be purchased directly from Figure 53.
  • Audio is typically routed to ST1 on the QU-32

🧰 Typical Workflow

  1. Prepare cues in QLab (audio, video, fade, or stop).
  2. Assign outputs (e.g., main L/R to QU-32).
  3. Test playback with sound desk and projector powered on.
  4. Save show file and back up to USB or shared drive.
  5. If advanced features needed, activate a short-term license.
  6. After event store project in archive.

🪫 Maintenance and Notes

  • Keep macOS and QLab updated to current supported versions.
  • Disable system sounds and notifications before shows.
  • Ensure automatic sleep and screensaver are turned off.
  • Always quit QLab and eject USB drives before shutting down.
