Audio-Technica ATM33a (x2)

Type: Small-diaphragm condenser, cardioid
Best for: Detailed instrument capture and ensemble work
Why it’s useful:
- Clear, natural sound with good transient response
- Wide, smooth pickup for groups or acoustic instruments
- Much more sensitive than a dynamic mic
Typical uses:
- Piano (upright or grand)
- Choirs / group vocals
- Acoustic guitar
- Drum overhead or single band overhead (with care)
Audio-Technica MB 4k (x1)

Type: Large-diaphragm condenser, cardioid
Best for: Full, blended sound sources and room capture
Why it’s useful:
- Fuller low-mid response than small-diaphragm mics
- Good sense of space and cohesion
- Works well as a ‘glue’ mic
Typical uses:
- Single overhead mic for a whole band
- Room mic
- Solo or lead vocal (quieter stages)
- Piano or acoustic instruments where warmth is wanted
Audio-Technica AT835b (x2)

Type: Short shotgun condenser microphone
Best for: Directional pickup of speech, not music
Why it’s useful:
- Very narrow pickup pattern
- Excellent at isolating sound at a distance
- Designed for broadcast and video rather than music
Typical uses:
- Dialogue for theatre or video
- Film / broadcast audio
- Spot pickup of speech where close miking isn’t possible
Not ideal for:
- Music recording indoors
- Ensemble or band miking (can cause phase and tonal issues)
